Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers and heifers 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Good demand for steers and heifers. A lighter run, two full loads of steers, balance part loads and stock trailer loads of steers and heifers. Last week's run-up in the direct fat cattle market carried over into the auction this week. Cattle are fairly clean, weights continue to run heavy as the winter was rather mild and cattle have gained pretty efficiently. Slaughter lambs under 110 lbs steady to 5.00 higher, up to 40.00 higher on 100-110 lbs, over 110 lbs mostly steady. Slaughter ewes 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Another very large offering of sheep, the market was active across all classes. Demand for slaughter lambs remains good, very good demand for slaughter ewes. Very good demand for bred ewes as the lamb market is at an attractive price level.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
