Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Choice slaughter steers 8.00 lower. Choice slaughter heifers 9.00 lower. Dairy steers 3.00 lower. No implant and drug free cattle bringing a premium. Many load lots, along with lots of smaller strings in the offering today. Good demand throughout the sale. CME live cattle futures have been on the decline for several weeks. Today CME live cattle futures are 1.00 lower. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows 2.00 lower. Boner cows 2.00-3.00 lower. Lean cows steady to 1.00 lower. Bulls 4.00 lower. Slaughter lambs: Limited number of light lambs both weeks. Lambs 70# 5.00 lower. Lambs 110 lbs 3.00-6.00 lower, 120-130 lbs 5.00-8.00 lower, 140 # 4.00-6.00 lower. Slaughter ewes mostly steady.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
