Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

No sale last week, due to the Independence Day holiday. Compared to the sale two weeks ago; choice slaughter steers 5.00 higher. Choice slaughter heifers 4.00-5.00 higher. Dairy steers steady to 1.00 higher with limited numbers. Consignments included several load lots, along with plenty of smaller packages. Large offering of dairy beef cattle today. The arena was crowded and a constant line of trailers ready to unload was the norm most of the day. Demand was good throughout the sale. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows 1.00-2.00 higher. Boner cows steady to 1.00 higher. Lean cows 2.00 lower. Bulls steady to 1.00 higher. Slaughter lambs: Lambs 60 lbs 38.00 higher, 80 lbs 10.00 higher, 90 lbs steady to 4.00 higher. Lambs 100 lbs 3.00-9.00 lower, 120-140 lbs mostly 10.00-14.00 lower. BIG sheep and goat sale with 5545 head going through the ring today!
