Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Choice slaughter steers were mostly 3.00-4.00 higher, with no implant steers bringing a premium. Choice slaughter heifers had limited numbers today. No comparison. Too light a test last week for dairy steers. Upward trend noted. Several large strings of steers and dairy beef cross cattle in the offering, along with plenty of smaller groups. Attendance was lighter today, but demand was still good. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows 1.00 higher. Boner cows steady to 1.00 lower. Lean cows 3.00-4.00 lower. Limited number of bulls. No comparison. Slaughter lambs: Lambs 50-60 lbs steady to 4.00 lower, 70-90 lbs mostly 11.00-12.00 higher, 100 lbs 17.00 higher with light numbers today. Slaughter ewes steady to 5.00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
