Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Choice slaughter steers were 2.00-4.00 higher. Choice slaughter heifers were 4.00 higher with light numbers. Steers and heifers with no implants brought a premium on cattle under 1500 lbs. Limited numbers of dairy steers for comparison this week. Several load lots of steers, mostly over 1500 lbs in the offering today, along with many smaller strings. Demand was good throughout the sale. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows steady to 1.00 higher. Boner cows steady. Lean cows 1.00-2.00 higher. Bulls were showing 6.00 higher with very limited numbers. Slaughter lambs: 50-60 lb lambs were mostly 20.00-30.00 higher with limited numbers, 70-80 lb lambs were 1.00-3.00 lower. Heavier lambs were light last week for comparison, 110 lb lambs were 3.00 higher, 140 lb lambs 6.00 lower. Slaughter ewes steady to 5.00 higher with instances 15.00-25.-00 higher.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
