Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to the sale last week: Choice slaughter steers were 4.00-6.00 higher today. Choice slaughter heifers 3.00 higher. Dairy slaughter steers 6.00 higher. CME live cattle futures 1.00 higher. Cattle with no implants contributing to the increase in pricing today. Several load lots of steers in the offering today, along with plenty of smaller strings. Demand was good throughout the sale. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows 12.00 higher, Boner cows 2.00 higher, Lean cows 10.00 higher. Bulls 5.00 higher today. Slaughter lambs: Lambs under 100 lbs were 1.00 higher, over 100 lbs 3.00-7.00 higher. Slaughter ewes 3.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
