Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Choice slaughter steers were mostly 3.00-5.00 lower. Choice slaughter heifers mostly 3.00-6.00 lower. Holstein slaughter cattle have been scarce the last two weeks. Many large groups offered today. A decline on the live futures board has left the market weak this week, but demand was still good with some hesitation on colored cattle. Slaughter cows: Breaker cows steady to 1.00 higher. Boner cows are steady. Lean cows steady to 1.00 higher. There was a nice run of quality bulls today but limited numbers last sale for comparison. Slaughter sheep: Light lambs had lower undertones this week. Heavier lambs, 150 lbs range were steady to 3.00 higher. Slaughter ewes had a lighter offering today and came in 10.00 lower than last week.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
