Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Fed steers steady to 2.00 lower, heifers 2.00 lower. Holsteins to few to make a meaningful comparison. Demand for this eye appealing offering of slaughter cattle was good. Several semi loads offered. Small premium for non implant and program cattle. Black hide and high yielding cattle in biggest demand. Estimated dressed cost 290.00 - 295.00. CME Live Cattle closed higher, Corn unchanged. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher. Bulls steady. Traditional weight slaughter lambs steady to 10.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering was good. Good fleece and thick built were determining factors for buyers. 70 lbs - 90 lbs sold with lower undertones. Slaughter ewes to few in categories to make a meaningful comparison, sold with lower undertones.
