Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Fed steers sold steady, heifers 3.00 to 4.00 higher. Holsteins to few to make a meaningful comparison. Demand for this eye catching offering of slaughter cattle was excellent. Clean, high yielding, black hided were factors determining buyers bidding decisions. Several load lots offered today. A slight premium shown for non implant and program cattle. Black hided cattle in biggest demand. Estimated dressed cost 297.00 - 302.00. CME Live Cattle closed lower, while corn was higher. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 5.00 lower. Bulls steady. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 2.00 to 6.00 higher. Demand for this eye appealing offering was excellent. Good fleeces and high yield were factors that determined buyers decision to bid. 70 lbs - 90lbs sold steady. Slaughter ewes Good 6.00 to 10.00 higher, Utility steady to 3.00 lower. Black faced, young ewes in high demand.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
