Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Fed steers steady to 3.00 lower, heifers to few to make a meaningful comparison. Holsteins in a light test 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Demand for this eye appealing offering of slaughter cattle was moderate. Black hided cattle were in biggest demand creating wide price gaps. Non Implant cattle offered a good premium today. Most cattle hauled in overnight, making weighing conditions good for the buyer. 12 semi loads of mostly steers offered. Its been a few weeks since we've seen this many semi loads available. Estimated dress cost 290.00 - 297.00. CME Live Cattle closed slightly high, while Corn jumped a fair amount higher. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 lower. Bulls 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 7.00 to 10.00 lower. Demand for this large offering was moderate. Buyers were definitely looking for specific weights today. Several large groups of eye catching, well built sheep offered. 70 lbs - 90 lbs were quiet soft today compared to the past few weeks. Slaughter ewes steady to 10.00 higher on ewes with good body condition.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
