Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Fed steers 10.00 to 12.00 lower, heifers 7.00 to 9.00 lower. Holsteins in a very light test sold with steady undertones. Demand for this light offering of fed cattle was moderate. One half load of1500 lb cattle is all that was offered today. Some cattle carried a small amount of tag. Most cattle were hauled in overnight. Slight premium available for drug free and non implant cattle. Black hided cattle draw the most attention from buyers. The beautiful weather has farmers in the field planting. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold with steady undertones. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 14.00 to 18.00 lower. Demand for this eye catching offering of sheep was moderate. Continue to see less traditional weight slaughter lambs and more light. Several large lots of light weight lambs offered today. The light weight lambs sold much softer this week vs last. Slaughter ewes Good 2-3 steady, Good 4-5, Utility & Cull steady to 10.00 lower. Goats sold softer today as well.
