Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Fed steers and heifers sold with stronger undertones. Holsteins sold steadyish. There was not a good comparison to truly test the market today since last week was very light. 8 pot loads offered. Some cattle carried a fair amount of tag slowing down bidders excitement. Estimated dressed cost 287.00 - 294.00. Cash prices last week rallied to a new record high that was previously set at 171.38 in November of 2014. The surge in prices reflects shrinking supply of market ready cattle and declining weights. With the nice weather and summer upon us comes grilling season. The question will be: Are consumers willing to continue paying high prices for beef with possibly higher prices on the horizon? Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Bulls steady. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 17.00 to 20.00 lower. Demand for this large offering of lambs was good. Several buyers in the seats, as well as, on line Light weight lambs 60 lbs and under were the most sought after today. Young, fat, black faced ewes created a bidding frenzy. Slaughter ewes 5.00 to 15.00 higher.
