Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Fed steers and heifers steady to 1.00 higher. Holstein steers 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Demand for this eye appealing group of slaughter cattle was good. Grade and cleanliness really affected the buyers decision. Muddy pen conditions are pulling the dressing percentage lower than normal. Consumers continue to demand higher quality beef cuts. Several primes available today. Year over year slaughter is 2.5% behind last year's pace. 14 semi loads offered today. Estimated dressed cost 265.00 - 272.00. CME Live cattle was lower while corn was higher. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 8.00 higher. Bulls 7.00 to 8.00 higher. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering was good. Lambs under 100 lbs were the hot commodity this week. Buyers were preparing for the upcoming holidays and the demand for lighter weight lambs. Slaughter ewes Good 2-3 and Cull 5.00 to 10.00 lower, Good 4-5 and Utility 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Meat and meat cross goats were very sought after today.
