Compared to last week: Fed steers and heifers 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Holsteins 6.00 to 7.00 lower. Demand for this eye appealing offering of fed cattle was good. Active in the seats as well as on the internet today. Black hided cattle are in biggest demand and create a price gap. Non Implant and drug free cattle showed a phenomenal price jump, with a big spread between conventional and program cattle. 25 pot loads of cattle offered today as well as small packages, giving buyers options to fill a load. Large volumes of snow with varying temperatures has created muddy pens, resulting in cattle carrying small to moderate amounts of tag today. Estimated dressed cost 252.00 - 258.00. Consumers consistently rank beef as a top source of protein. Analyst report solid demand base could help prices stay strong in the near term. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Bulls steady in a light test. Traditional slaughter weight lambs steady. New crop lambs with a light test looked to be higher. Demand for this nice offering of sheep and goats was good. Buyers actively looking for lighter weight sheep and goats.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
