Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to two weeks ago: Fed steers sold steady to 1.00 lower, heifers steady. Holsteins sold with lower undertones. Demand for this large eye appealing offering was good to very good. Cattle grading Prime and Choice are in the biggest demand. Most cattle were hauled in overnight making weighing conditions favorable for the buyer. With the winter weather over the past couple of week some cattle carried a small amount of tag. Estimated dressed cost 250.00 - 258.00. Consumers are driving demand for higher grading beef. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 higher. Slaughter Bulls 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Demand for this very large offering of attractive lambs was good. Slaughter ewes steady to 5.00 lower.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
