Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers 3.00 to 4.00 lower, heifers steady. Holsteins in a very light test sold with higher undertones. Demand for this nice offering of slaughter cattle was good. Black hided cattle are in biggest demand. Slight premium shown for non implant cattle. Some cattle carried a small amount of tag this week due to the weather the past couple of weeks. Estimated dressed cost 248.00 - 257.00. CME corn closed higher while live cattle fell slightly. 11.7 million cattle were recorded on feed on December 1, 3 percent lower than the same time last year. During the month of November cattle slaughter was up 2 percent over the same month last year. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 6.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold with higher undertones. Traditional slaughter weight lambs 10.00 to 12.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering was good. Slaughter ewes Good 4-5 & 2-3 steady to 2.00 higher, Utility 5.00 to 10.00 higher, Cull to few to make a meaningful comparison.
