Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers Choice 2-3 sold 3.00 to 5.00 higher, Choice 3-4 8.00 to 10.00 higher, heifers 8.00 to 10.00 higher. Holsteins sold 1.00 to 5.00 higher. Demand for this eye appealing offering of slaughter cattle was good. Non implant cattle were in high demand and brought a significant premium compared to last week. Black hided cattle are the most sought after, creating wide price gaps. Several nice loads of cattle offered, with most being hauled in yesterday. Fed cattle trade is toying with price levels the market has not seen since 2015. It's been more than 7 years since producers seen $2k for finished cattle. If beef demands continues to be strong the market could push further north. Estimated dressed cost 234.00 to 242.00. CME Live cattle higher, while corn is lower. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 higher. Bulls 3.00 to 5.00 higher Traditional slaughter weight lambs steady. Demand for this nice offering was moderate. Slaughter ewes in light test sold with lower undertones.
