Compared to last week: Slaughter steers steady to 1.00 lower, heifers 1.00 to 4.00 lower. Holsteins 3.00 to 5.00 lower. Demand for this eye appealing offering of fat cattle was moderate. Wide price gaps created by the demand for black cattle. Estimated dressed cost 224.00 - 230.00. CME Live Cattle slightly higher, corn a little lower. Slaughter cows steady to 4.00 higher. Slaughter bulls steady to 1.00 higher. Traditional weight slaughter lambs 5.00 to 9.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering was moderate. Light lambs sold with lower undertones. Slaughter ewes Good 4-5 20.00 to 25.00 lower, Good 2-3 5.00 to 8.00 lower, Utility 10.00 to 15.00 lower, Cull to few to make a meaningful comparison.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
