Compared to two weeks ago: Slaughter steers 1.00 to 3.00 lower, heifers steady to 2.00 lower. Holsteins 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering of eye appealing cattle was moderate. Most cattle were hauled in overnight making weighing conditions good. Black hided cattle continue to be in biggest demand creating wide spread prices. Estimated dressed weight 221.00 -229.00. Corn and soybeans have skyrocketed the last 48 hours, corn up $0.80, soybeans up $1.15. CME Live cattle futures closed lower while corn closed higher. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 5.00 higher. Bulls sold with higher undertones. Traditional slaughter weight lambs 9.00 to 11.00 lower. New crop lambs are selling with higher undertones. Demand for this nice offering was moderate. Slaughter ewes sold steady to 5.00 higher. Demand for ewes continues to be good.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
