Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers steady to 2.00 higher, heifers 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Holsteins steady to 4.00 higher. Demand for this nice offering of slaughter cattle was good. Black hided cattle are in the highest demand making a wide spread in prices. Program cattle showed a good premium. Two way buyers stepped in when they saw a good buy on eye appealing cattle. Still seeing several loads of 1600 lb cattle this week along with a load of 1700 lbs. Estimated dressed weight was 198.00 - 203.00. CME Live Cattle closed higher with corn taking a big jump as well. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 higher. Bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison. Traditional Slaughter weight lambs 5.00 to 9.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering of lambs was moderate. Slaughter ewes sold with lower undertones in a light test the past two weeks. Demand for ewes this week was good.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
