Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers steady to 4.00 lower, heifers 1.00 to 4.00 lower. Holsteins 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Demand for this large offering of eye appealing slaughter cattle was good. Weighing conditions were favorable for the buyers as most were brought in over night. Two way buyers stepped up to help the market as the highest demand seems to be for black hided cattle, which creates wide price spreads. Drug free and program cattle showed a slight premium today. Estimated dressed weight 192.00 - 200.00. We saw 5 loads of 1600lbs plus cattle. CME Live Cattle Futures down as well as corn. Slaughter cows 4.00 to 6.00 lower. Bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison, lower undertones present. Traditional slaughter weight lambs steady to 5.00 lower, over 150lbs steady to 2.00 higher. Several lots of sheep weighing over 150lbs were in high demand today. Overall demand for slaughter sheep and ewes was good. Slaughter ewes Good 2-3 10.00 to 15.00 higher, Good 4-5 and Utility in a light test sold with higher undertones. No Cull ewes today.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
