Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers Choice 2-3 steady to 1.00 lower, Choice 3-4 2.00 to 4.00 lower, heifers 4.00 to 5.00 lower. Holstein steers 5.00 lower. Moderate demand for this nice offering of hard fed cattle. We saw 3 loads of cattle weighing in the 1600lb range. CME Live Cattle Futures slightly higher at the time of this report. CME Corn lower again today, fair amount lower this week. Slaughter Cows Boner steady to 1.00 lower, Lean 1.00 to 3.00 lower, Breaker to few to make a meaningful comparison. Bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison. Traditional weight sheep down 6.00 to 13.00. Demand for this large offering of market ready sheep was moderate. Some packers are having a hard time finding people to work and run the facility at full capacity. Ewes Good 2-3 2.00 to 8.00 lower, Good 4-5 steady to 3.00 lower, Utility 5.00 to 6.00 lower, cull to few to make a meaningful comparison.
