Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Slaughter steers and heifers steady to 1.00 higher, Holstein steers sold with a lower undertone compared to a limited test last week. Moderate demand for this nice offering of attractive, high quality grading, full loads of hard fed steers and heifers. Weighing conditions ran towards the full side and hides were carrying some dirt and tag, estimated dressed cost ranged from 164.00-167.00. All packer buyers were participating and two way buyers continue to buy 1450 lbs cattle, sometimes heavier even, that look to be a value which helps to support the market. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 4.00 lower, except for Lean cows steady. Slaughter bulls 2.00 lower. Slaughter lambs mostly steady. Feeder lambs not well compared as few went to feeding accounts. Slaughter ewes 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Good demand remains for slaughter lambs, the market was active. Very good demand for slaughter ewes, and for ewes in good enough shape to return to the country. Moderate to good demand for feeder lambs.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
