Compared to last week: Slaughter steers and heifers 2.00 to 3.00 lower, except 1600 lbs steers steady. Holstein steers 2.00 to 3.00 higher. Light to moderate demand from packer buyers this week for this large offering of attractive, clean, high quality grading steers and heifers. Better demand from two way buyers willing to take on a 1450 lbs steer and bet that the fat market will be higher in 30 days. Packer were very reserved in their pursuit of cattle this week as many times the bid would have to back all the way down to 102.00-103.00 to get them to bid, the market was not very active. The vast majority of consignments were offered in full load lots. Weighing conditions ranged from fair to full, estimated dressed cost of the loads ran from 166.00-169.00. Slaughter cows 2.00 to 4.00 higher than Monday’s sale, bulls steady. Slaughter lambs mostly steady. Feeder lambs not well compared. Slaughter ewes steady to instances of 5.00 higher. Demand for slaughter lambs was more moderate this week, the market was not as active as it has been recently. Moderate to good demand for feeder lambs, quality was uneven as there were more smaller frame lambs offered. Moderate to good demand for slaughter ewes.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
