Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 10.00 to 15.00 lower, except 600-700 lbs steady to 5.00 lower. Feeder heifers 10.00 to 15.00 lower, except 500-600 lbs up to 10.00 higher. Very good demand for light steers and heifers, and those to make replacement heifers of, demand moderate to good for those cattle bound for finishing yards. With cash fed cattle last week trading down to 239.00, and a lower futures trade throughout the majority of the sale, cattle feeders are concerned that outgoing fed cattle this Spring might not reach breakeven prices. Plenty of long strings of attractive, high quality home raised steers and heifers, along with numerous smaller consignments to put together. Many long strings of yearlings, flesh moderate to moderate plus, offered in full loads and multiple load lots. The market was still very active on the light cattle, but only moderate on the feeding type cattle.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
