"Back to Grass" Special Feeder Cattle Sale. Compared to last week: Steers 750 lbs and under, too limited last week for comparison. Upward trend noted. Steers 800 lbs 3.00 lower with color and flesh bringing a discount, 900 lb steers 5.00 higher. Heifers 600 lbs were 7.00-9.00 higher, 700 lbs 2.00 lower, 750 lbs 6.00-8.00 lower. Many load lots in the offering today, including a consignment of 835 black steers. Good demand today, especially on light cattle and load lots. Slaughter cows: Breaker and Boner cows steady to 1.00 higher. Limited number of Lean cows today for comparison. No bulls in the offering last week to compare.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
