Compared to two weeks ago: Feeder steers 650 lbs - 750 lbs, 800 lbs - 950 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 higher, other weights not significantly compared. Feeder heifers 450 lbs - 550 lbs, 700 lbs - 750 lbs, 850 lbs - 900 lbs 3.00 to 6.00 higher, other weights not compared well. Demand for light cattle today was electric, light weight cattle hit $4.00. Outstanding market for light weight, weaned cattle with a vaccination program. Demand for all weights of cattle was good. Black hide is the biggest factor for bidders along with rounds of shots and flesh conditions. CME Feeder Cattle and Corn closed higher. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher. Bulls 4.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
