Compared to last week: Feeder steers 1.00 to 4.00 higher with instances of 20.00, except 600 lbs - 700 lbs steady to 1.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 3.00 higher with instances of 17.00, except 650 lbs - 700 lbs 6.00 to 9.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering of eye appealing cattle was good. Lightweight grass cattle really got buyers on the edge of their seats to bid. The lighter weight cattle jumped a significant amount this week as they are getting harder to find. Black hided cattle, several rounds of shots and days weaned were factors influencing the buyers decisions as well. With a wild winter storm mid week last week the cattle were in great shape and clean this week. Several farmer buyers in the seats today along with an active internet kept the auction active. The winter calf market is outperforming expectations, is the opinion voiced by many buyers talking today. Placements in feedlots in January were 4 % below January of 2022. Optimism in the feeder market continues! Slaughter cows and bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
