Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 3.00 higher with instance of 11.00, except 900 lbs - 950 lbs steady to 1.00 lower. Feeder heifers steady to 2.00 higher with instances of 7.00. Demand for this eye appealing offering was good to very good. One consignment consisted of over 700 head. This consignment offered 2 pot load lots on several weights, drawing very good demand. Special section of red angus cattle caught good attention as well. Vaccination program, weaning days and flesh conditions all contributed to the demand for this nice group of feeder cattle. Several farmer feeders in the seats today. January 1, 2023 inventory was down 3% from last year at the same, December placement was down 8% compared to December of 2021. CME Feeder closed higher while corn took a decent drop. Slaughter cows steady to 2.00 lower. Bulls steady to 2.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
