Compared to last week: Feeder steers 450 lbs - 600 lbs, 700 lbs - 800 lbs steady to 4.00 higher with instances of 17.00, 600 lbs - 700 lbs, 800 lbs - 900 lbs steady to 2.00 lower. Feeder heifers 350 lbs - 450 lbs, 500 lbs- 600 lbs, 750 lbs - 800 lbs steady to 5.00 lower with instances of 10.00, 450 lbs - 500 lbs, 600 lbs - 750 lbs, 800 lbs - 850 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 higher. Demand for this large offering of eye appealing feeder cattle was good to very good. Flesh conditions were grass fed to heavily backgrounded. Several offerings of lot loads, along with part loads and small packages for buyers to fill orders. Green and Gold tag cattle along with cattle that had two plus rounds of shots and several weeks weaned really caught the eyes of the buyers in the seats as well as a few internet buyers. The severe temperatures and snow has made it hard for producers to keep cattle in good conditions like they like. Cancellations from last week brought in an abundance of attractive cattle this week. Next week looks to be a nice sized sale as well. Slaughter cows Breaker and Boner 2.00 to 4.00 higher, Lean to few to make a meaningful comparison. Bulls sold with steady to higher undertones.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
