Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 4.00 lower, except under 600 lbs 1.00 to 4.00 higher, 1000 lbs steers sold with higher undertones, feeder heifers 1.00 to 5.00 lower, except under 550 lbs steady to 5.00 higher. Demand for this smaller yet eye appealing offering of cattle was good. Lighter weight cattle were in high demand today, package size did not effect the demand for the light cattle. Black hided, load lots vs small packages and shot history were factors effecting cattle over 600 lbs today. Late October rains and warm up for a couple weeks have sparked hope for some producers to be able to have the ability to graze more cattle through the winter than was expected a couple months ago. These factors have helped support lightweight calf prices during fall weaning. The economic uncertainty could be what is keeping prices from escalating to much. Several nice loads of yearlings, hauled in overnight sold with lots of interest. CME Feeder Cattle closed higher while corn was slightly lower. Slaughter cows 1.00 to 5.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 1.00 to 3.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
