Compared to two weeks ago: Limited price comparisons available, the last few weeks have been light due to harvest being in full swing . Steers and heifers of similar weights were not available. Special Anniversary sale today drew in a large, eye appealing offering of green feeder cattle. Steady to higher undertones were very present today. Demand for this nice offering was outstanding. Nice string of yearlings, several load lots of light to moderate fleshed steers and heifers offered. Interest in the light calves and yearlings were pretty similar. Calf prices varied heavily on the color of the hide today creating wide price gaps. Other factors affecting the price were vaccinations received and load lots vs packages. Fed Cattle are pushing towards price levels that the market has not seen since 2015, close to $160 for April. Cattle on feed October 1 down 1 percent compared to last year at the same time. It's not looking like feeder prices will be falling anytime soon. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 lower. Bulls 7.00 to 9.00 lower.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
