Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 lower except 500lbs - 550lbs, 800lbs - 950lbs steady to 5.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 5.00 lower. Demand for this eye appealing offering of cattle was good. Several large lots of steers and heifers offered in pot load quantity. US Inventory of cattle on feed reported at 12.163 million head on March 1st, up 1% from last year. Highest March 1st inventory on record. Inventory has been larger than 11 million head for 52 out of the last 53 months. CME Feeder Cattle closed lower along with corn. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls 1.00 to 2.00 higher.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
