Compared to last week: Feeder steers steady to 5.00 lower, except 650lbs - 700lbs 1.00 to 4.00 higher, 750lbs - 800lbs 6.00 to 9.00 higher. Feeder heifers steady to 5.00 lower, except 450lbs - 600lbs steady to 5.00 higher, 700lbs - 750lbs 2.00 higher. Demand for this eye appealing offering of feeder cattle was good. Several farmer buyers in the seats today bidding. Flesh conditions were a little more than we have seen in previous weeks. Black hided cattle were in biggest demand, creating wide price gaps. Cattle on feed as of February 1st was up 1%. CME Feeder Cattle closed lower while corn jumped the limit higher. Slaughter cows steady to 3.00 lower. Slaughter bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
