Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 650 lbs steady to 3.00 lower, over 650 lbs steady to 3.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 600lbs higher undertones were very evident, over 600 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 higher, except 800-850 lbs 1.00 to 3.00 lower. Demand for this large offering of eye appealing cattle was good. The biggest demand continues to be black hided cattle. Several lots of lighter cattle this week, with only a few loads of yearlings. Feeder steers and heifers were clean and green today. Several farmer feeders bidding and buying cattle today. CME Feeder Cattle closed higher as well as corn. Slaughter cows Boner and Lean steady to 2.00 higher, Breaker to few to make a meaningful comparison. Slaughter bulls steady.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
