Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: Feeder steers under 600 lbs sold with higher undertones, too lightly tested in recent weeks to make a complete comparison, 600-650 steady to 3.00 lower, 650-700 lbs 10.00 to 12.00 higher, 700-750 1.00 to 3.00 higher, 950 lbs and higher 3.00 to 6.00 higher. Feeder heifers under 450 lbs sold with higher undertoness, 450-500 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 higher, 500-550lbs 3.00 to 5.00 higher, 550-600 lbs 3.00 to 4.00 lower, 600-700 lbs 5.00 to 8.00 lower, 750-800 lbs steady to 4.00 lower. Demand for this nice offering of green cattle was excellent today. Very active bidding today especially on steers. US Inventory reported 11.95 million head on feed November 1st, down slightly from last year. CME Live Feeders closed slightly higher today, while corn took a decent jump higher. Slaughter cows steady to 1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
