Compared to two weeks ago: The only comparison was on feeder steers 750-800 lbs steady to 2.00 lower, 900-950 lbs steady to 1.00 higher, feeder heifers 700-750 lbs 2.00 to 5.00 higher, 800-850 lbs 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Demand for this light offering of very eye appealing cattle was good. The lighter cattle were not as sought after as the heavier weights. Buyers were very active on cattle over 1000 lbs. Several loads of cattle today weighing from 900-1100 lbs. The CME Live Feeder market was up 3.00 today, while the price of corn went down .15. Slaughter cows Breaker 2.00 to 3.00 lower, Boner to few to make a meaningful comparison, Lean 1.00 to 2.00 lower. Slaughter bulls to few to make a meaningful comparison.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
