Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale; Steer calves 400-450 lbs and 500-550 lbs sold 10.00-16.00 higher and 450-500 lbs were 16.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs sold 8.00 lower and 650-700 lbs were 5.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs sold 20.00 higher while 350-400 lbs were 5.00 lower and 400-600 lbs sold 7.00-20.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs were 10.00 higher. Weaning and vaccination programs are recognized. Trade and market were moderately higher on larger numbers with good demand. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-6.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 7.00 higher. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
