Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves 350-450 lbs sold lower with 550-600 lbs being 15.00-20.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-650 lbs were 10.00-20.00 higher. Heifer calves 400-450 lbs sold 16.00-23.00 higher and 500-550 lbs were lower. No comparable numbers or sales of feeder heifers Prices range according to quality, fill, condition and quantity. Trade was moderate on larger numbers with an uneven market. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 lower and slaughter bulls were steady to 3.00 higher. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
