Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last sale; Steer calves 400-600 lbs sold 5.00-12.00 lower except for 450-500 lbs being 10.00-15.00 higher. Feeder steers 600-700 sold 10.00 lower with 900-950 lbs 8.00 higher. Heifer calves sold 5.00-10.00 higher and no comparable sales on feeder heifers but a lower market was evident. Trade and demand were moderate on smaller numbers. Slaughter cows sold 6.00-10.00 lower and slaughter bulls were 5.00 higher. Next sale will be Monday June 1,2026. Excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
