Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves sold 7.00-12.00 lower with the exception of 400-500 lbs being 5.00-11.00 higher. Feeder steer yearlings were 3.00-6.00 higher except for 600-650 lbs being 7.00 lower. Heifer calves 400-500 lbs sold 13.00-16.00 higher with 500-600 lbs being 4.00-10.00 lower. Heifer yearlings had insufficient numbers to compare. Trade and demand were moderate on similar numbers to last week. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-4.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 1.00-3.00 higher. Market was moderate with excellent buyer attendance, Next sale will be January 6,2025

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
