Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves sold 10.00-15.00 higher with the exception of 500-550 lbs being 4.00 higher. Feeder steer yearlings were steady to 8.00 higher with 700-750 lbs being 2.00 lower. Heifer calves sold 5.00-10.00 higher with instances 0f 15.00 higher. No comparable sales to report on feeder heifers. Trade and demand were very good on bigger bunches of calves with weaning dates and vaccination reports. Slaughter cows sold steady to 5.00 higher and slaughter bulls were 1.00-2.00 higher. Market was very active with excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
