Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 300-450 lbs sold sharply higher and 450-600 lbs were 12.00-15.00 higher. Steer yearlings 600-650 lbs sold 12.00 higher with 700-750 lbs 6.00 lower. Heifer calves 300-350 lbs were 2.00 lower and 350-450 lbs were 2.00-14.00 higher while 450-500 lbs sold sharply lower and 500-600 lbs were steady to sharply higher. Heifer yearlings 600-700 lbs sold steady to sharply higher. Slaughter cows were steady to 11.00 higher instances 2.00-6.00 lower and slaughter bulls sold 1.00 higher instances 10.00 lower. Market was stronger with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
