Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last weeks sale; Steer calves 300-500 lbs were 5.00 -10.00 higher instances 8.00 lower and 500-600 lbs steady to 4.00 higher. Feeder steers 800-850 lbs sold 3.00 higher with insufficient numbers to compare on remainder of feeders last week. Heifer calves 350-500 lbs sold significantly lower and 500-600 lbs were steady to 7.00 higher. Feeder heifers 600-650 lbs sold 13.00 higher while 850-900 lbs were 9.00 higher. Trade was moderate on larger numbers with unsteady demand. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 3.00 lower and slaughter cows were 1.00 higher to 9.00 lower. Market was uneven with excellent buyer attendance.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
