Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week; Steer calves 300-400 lbs were sharply higher and 400-450 lbs sold 15.00 higher while 450-500 lbs were 3.00 lower. Steers 500-550 lbs were sharply higher and 550-600 lbs sold 12.00 lower. Feeder steers 600-700 lbs were 2.00-3.00 lower while 700-750 sold 17.00 higher. Heifer calves 300-400 lbs were sharply higher and 400-500 lbs sold 7.00-14.00 higher while 500-600 lbs were 6.00-21.00 higher. Feeder heifers had insignificant numbers to compare this week. Trade was moderately active on smaller numbers with good demand. Slaughter cows sold 3.00-5.00 lower instances 3.00 higher and slaughter bulls sold 9.00-13.00 higher. Very active market with excellent buyer attendance.
