Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steer calves 300-350 lbs were 2.00 lower while 350-400 lbs sold sharply lower; 400-450 lbs were 6.00 higher and 450-500 lbs sold 13.00 lower; 500-600 lbs were 3.00-21.00 higher. Feeder steers sold steady to 5.00 higher with the exception of 600-650 lbs being sharply lower. Heifer calves 400-500 lbs were 17.00-24.00 lower while 500-550 lbs sold 9.00 higher and 550-600 lbs were 3.00 lower. Feeder heifers 600-700 lbs sold 10.00-14.00 higher. Trade was moderate on an uneven market with larger numbers. Slaughter cows sold 8.00-12.00 lower while slaughter bulls were7.00-12.00 lower. Moderate demand and excellent buyer attendance

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
