Market comments — USDA reporter

Compare to last week, steer and heifer calves under 350 lbs were not well tested. Steer calves 350-400 lbs 8.00 higher; 350-400 lbs were steady; 500-550 lbs 5.00-6.00 lower; 550-600 lbs have no comparison due to low numbers last week. Heifer calves 350-400 lbs traded 4.00 higher; 400-500 lbs steady to 3.00 lower; 500-550 lbs 7.00-9.00 higher; 550-600 lbs 2.00-3.00 lower. Feeder steers and heifers had insufficient numbers last week for a comparison. Trade active, demand good. Slaughter cows 4.00-7.00 higher and slaughter bulls 4.00 higher. A special replacement sale was held in conjunction with the regular sale, with over 50 head of outstanding quality bulls and a few heifers on offer.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
