Compared to last week: Feeder steers and heifers were too lightly tested last sale or this sale to develop any market trend. Quality was mostly plain to average today and mostly offered in very small packages or as singles. Demand for feeders was mostly light. Country and pen conditions are muddy following last weeks snow. Most calves were dirty this week and buyers discounted calves as a result. Market activity was mostly slow. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand and moderate to heavy offerings. Slaughter cows sold 2.00-4.00 higher on boning cows and 1.00-3.00 higher on lean cows. Breaking slaughter cows were too lightly tested to trend as most were purchased to feed this week. Demand for feeding cows was good to very good. Buyer participation was very good with as many as 8 buyers actively bidding on cows to return to feed throughout the sale. Thin cows purchased to feed or turn out on corn stalks this winter sold 2.00-4.00 higher. High quality feeding cows suitable to feed to premium white sold 1.00-3.00 higher. Weigh up conditions were average to below average this sale, with most cows pushing heavy amounts of fill. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 2.00-4.00 higher. Cow quality today was mostly average to attractive. Young age cows sold mostly 10.00-15.00 lower. Demand for these offerings was mostly moderate from rebreed buyers and light to moderate from feeding buyers.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
