Compared to last sale(12-14-22): Feeder cattle were too lightly tested either this sale or last to develop any market trend, steady to higher undertones were noticed. Feeder cattle quality was mostly plain to average this sale. Most calves were offered in small groups or as singles. Demand was mostly light to moderate for light offerings. Market activity was slow to moderate. A good buyer pool was on hand for todays light sale. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand and moderate offerings. Packers showed mostly good demand for slaughter cows this week as snowy conditions in the upper plains has limited the available supplies of cows for immediate harvest. Slaughter cows sold mostly 4.00-5.00 higher on breaking and boning cows. Lean cows saw the largest advancement selling 7.00-9.00 higher. Feeding cows sold 2.00-3.00 higher. Slaughter bulls sold mostly 7.00-9.00 higher. Weigh up conditions were mostly average to below average this sale. Bulls were particularly full today. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold steady to 5.00 higher in a narrow comparison.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
