Compared to last week: Feeder cattle were too lightly tested either this week or last week in any particular weight group to develop an accurate market trend, however steady to higher undertones were noticed on both steers and heifers. Quality this week was mixed from plain to attractive. Demand was mostly moderate to good. Several sets of unweaned calves sold this sale as drought conditions are driving calves to market. Demand for unweaned calves was light to moderate. Market activity this sale was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows comprised most of the sale again this week. Packers showed stronger demand for feeding cows this week following last weeks decline. Feeding cows sold mostly 1.00-2.00 higher, with instances of 3.00 higher seen at times. Packers showed really good demand for breaking flesh cows for immediate harvest as they search for fat to blend down the lean cows which are being marketed out of drought areas. Breaking cows sold mostly 2.00-4.00 higher. Boning and lean cows sold steady to firm. Slaughter bulls sold steady to 1.00 lower. Young age cows suitable to feed or rebreed sold mostly 3.00 lower. Demand for these offerings was mostly moderate. Cow calf pairs were of mostly plain to average quality this week and many pairs split as it was more advantageous to the seller to sell the cow and calf separately.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News — federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the official USDA document at the top of the page.
